Abstract :

Struma ovarii is a specialized ovarian teratoma variant, where there is monodermal differentiation of tissue element. The term is reserved only for those tumors composed entirely or predominantly of normal thyroid tissue. Most of them are unilateral, although 6-15% are bilateral. After a retrospective review of gynecologic patients from Centro Oncologico Estatal (ISSEMyM), three Struma ovarii cases were found and are the subject of this study. We describe the definition, incidence, symptoms, primary diagnosis, macro and microscopic findings as well as the treatment each patient received. Case #1: 58y, Place of origin is Guadalajara, Jalisco, Occupation is Housewife, Primary diagnosis is Left complex ovarian cyst, Treatment was Exploratory laparotomy and resection of both ovaries, History of cancer was Invasive ductal carcinoma (herself). Case #2 : 46y, Place of origin is Nicolas Romero, Mexico, Occupation is Housewife, Primary diagnosis is Cervical cancer clinical stage IB1, Treatment was Type III radical hysterectomy, Alcoholism/ smoking history is Smoked for 10y, then suspended. Case #3 : 53y, Place of origin is San Felipe Tlalmimilolpan, Mexico, Occupation is Housewife, Primary diagnosis is Right adnexal tumor, Treatment was Ovarian cancer surgery routine, History of cancer was Cervical cancer (mother). As found on our review, this type of teratoma is rare and represents 0.3 - 0.4% among all ovarian neoplasms and oscillates between 2.5 and 2.7 % among ovarian teratomas. It is well differentiated and normally benign, although in some occasions it can suffer malignant transformation. Less than 5% are malignant and even if they are, rarely metastasize.
