Abstract :

Many studies have been carried out on the issue of climate change in Nigeria and the world at large. It has been established that global warming is real. While the evidence and impacts of climate change are not new the relevance of creating awareness through education is keen in solving climate change problems. The evidence of climate change, the natural and human factors of climate change, the effects of climate change and the mitigating impacts of climate change through education are sketchy in Nigeria and many other developing countries. It is on the basis of this that this study is been carried out. This was achieved by adopting appropriate pedagogical methods aimed at helping to improve the understanding of the science of climate change and to acquire necessary skills to mitigate its impact on our environment. Data were collected from the review of existing literature, rainfall and temperature data from meteorological stations and oral interview. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed through systematic random sampling to ascertain the awareness level of the people. The results showed that changes in rainfall pattern is not necessarily the reasons for climate change but increased regional and global warming as evidenced in the areas of flooding, drought and desertification, the wind system, agriculture, water resources, landscape features, urbanization and soil erosion. Recommendations are therefore made on the need for curricula review to accommodate frontline environmental issues and problems with adequate materials so as to enhance meaningful learning and teaching. Government must lead in the struggle to address climate change with the use of awareness creation through education.
