Freud believed that people could be cured by making their unconscious thoughts and motivations aware, thereby gaining "intuition." The goal of psychoanalysis therapy is to liberate repressed emotions and experiences, that is, to make the unconscious conscious. Psychoanalysis is both a theory of how the mind works and a treatment. In recent years, the two have given way to more dominant and research-oriented approaches, but psychoanalysis is still a thriving field.
