Protein microarrays can be classified into two broad categories, forward phase protein microarrays and reverse phase protein microarrays, according to the immobilized molecules (antigen or antibody). With so-called forward phase protein microarrays, one protein sample is screened against multiple reagents. The capture regent, usually an antibody, is first affixed to the slide surface.
