Qualitative research may be able to answer the reasons why adults and children participate or not in physical and sporting activities. This article systematically reviews published and unpublished qualitative research studies on the reasons for the participation and non-participation of children and adults in the UK in sport and physical activity. The review covers peer-reviewed and gray literature from 1990 to 2004. Articles were subject to review if they: aimed to explore participants' experiences of sport and physical activity and the reasons for participation or non-participation in sport and physical activity, collected information about participants who lived in the UK and presented data collected using qualitative methods. The majority of these studies have reported research with youth based in community settings. Weight management, social interaction and fun were common reasons for participating in sport and physical activity. Concerns about maintaining a slim figure motivated the participation of young girls. Seniors identified the importance of sport and physical activity to avoid the effects of aging and provide a network of social support. Identity challenges such as having to show an unfit body, lacking confidence and skill in basic skills, or appearing too masculine were barriers to participation.
