Futsal, the 5-a-side version of soccer (that is, 1 goalkeeper and 4 field players), was introduced in 1930 and continues to gain popularity worldwide. Competitive games include two periods of 20 minutes of intermittent high intensity activity requiring substantial physical, tactical and technical effort on the part of the players. A better understanding of physical and technical requirements will facilitate the development of futsal and allow practitioners to undertake training regimes appropriate to the demands of the sport. The objective of this review is to examine key aspects of futsal such as match analysis, physiological requirements, energy requirements, fitness measures and required skills. Futsal players experience fatigue as the game progresses due to the intense nature of the game and the maximum repeating effort required for the sprint. The intermittent nature of sport requires the use of aerobic and anaerobic energy pathways throughout exercise. Therefore, a futsal player must have great intermittent endurance ability, repeated sprinting ability and leg power, while the technical aspects include high level shooting ability and passing skills, agility and coordination. Future research is warranted to help practitioners develop more specific tests in futsal performance, particularly with regard to skills.
