Organized team sport is a popular activity for young Americans. Although sport participation is associated with many positive health outcomes, the possibility of continuing to participate in organized and structured sports decreases with age. Participation in sport is also associated with sport identity, an aspect of personal identity that corresponds to the extent to which individuals identify with the role of athlete. While sporting identity is often studied in the context of the negative consequences that can arise when the role of the athlete is disrupted or interrupted, there are also positive associations with continued identification as an athlete, particularly in this regard. which relates to health behaviors such as exercise. Lifestyle sports are a way for individuals to continue to participate in sport-related activities throughout their lives, potentially pursuing the beneficial elements of sport identity. This study seeks to explore the relationship between sport identity and health behaviors. Specifically, it examines this relationship in sporting lifestyle contexts independent of formal organized sports such as high school or college athletics. The results showed that sports identity is positively linked to the frequency of exercise, participation in recreational sports and health behaviors. In addition, these associations were found regardless of past experience in a formal athletic role. The results have implications for identifying the potential of sport identity to positively influence health, particularly in activity settings that are more inclusive and lifestyle-oriented than organized and formal team sports.
