An imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the detoxification of their reactive intermediates causes oxidative stress. Cells must respond to this imbalance before highly reactive molecules damage cell structures, especially DNA. Severe and prolonged oxidative stress can trigger apoptosis and necrosis. Many pathological conditions have a component of oxidative stress, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and chronic inflammation.
