Data mining is a process of finding patterns at the intersection of machine learning, statistics, and database systems in broad data sets involving methods. Data mining is an interdisciplinary computer science and statistics subfield with the overall objective of extracting information from a data set and transforming the information into an understandable structure for further use. Data mining is the analytical step of the process of "discovery of knowledge in databases," or KDD. It also includes aspects of database and data management, data pre-processing, model and inference considerations, interesting metrics, complexity considerations, post-processing of discovered structures, visualization, and online updating in addition to the raw analysis step. The word "data mining" is a misnomer, as the goal is to derive patterns and information from vast quantities of data, not data extraction (mining) itself. It is also a buzzword and is often used for any form of large-scale data or information processing as well as for any application of computer decision support systems, including artificial intelligence.
