Musculoskeletal diseases (MSD) often indicate a significant amount of stress and strain on the load bearing joints. Some of the risk factors associated with MSD are age, gender, sedentary lifestyle (i.e., lack of physical activity), and anthropometry, such as body weight. Age is considered a major driver of MSD prevalence due to age- related degeneration of tissue surrounding the joints. Furthermore, loss of muscle strength increases the severity of surrounding soft tissue damage and provides less support for the load bearing joints, leading to more debilitating MSD Open access to the scientific literature means the removal of barriers (including price barriers) from accessing scholarly work. There are two parallel roads towards open access: Open Access articles and self-archiving. Open Access articles are immediately, freely available on their Web site, a model mostly funded by charges paid by the author (usually through a research grant).
