Mechanisms Of Yoga

Research suggesting the beneficial effects of yoga on myriad aspects of psychological health has proliferated in recent years, yet there is currently no overarching framework by which to understand yoga’s potential beneficial effects. Here we provide a theoretical framework and systems-based network model of yoga that focuses on integration of top-down and bottom-up forms of self-regulation. Mechanisms underlying the modulating effects of yogic cognitive-behavioral practices (eg, meditation, yoga asanas, pranayama breathing, caloric restriction) on human physiology can be classified into 4 transduction pathways: humoral factors, nervous system activity, cell trafficking, and bioelectromagnetism. As Yoga therapists work with neurologically involved clients with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis, we recognize the opportunity to simultaneously expand our own knowledge base and communicate the therapeutic benefits of Yoga âsana to other medical and therapy practitioners. A discussion and comparison of mutually utilized therapeutic mechanisms inherent in Yoga âsana and other forms of therapy may generate enhancements to existing practices.
