Marine biology, the science concerned with sea-living animals and plants. It also deals with airborne and terrestrial organisms which are directly dependent on salt water bodies for food and other life necessities. It seeks to explain in the broadest sense all the essential phenomena pertaining to the myriads of living things that live in the vast oceans of this world. Any of its specialist branches are concerned with natural history, taxonomy, embryology, anatomy, biology, ecology, and geography. Because of the relationship between the physical features of the oceans and the living organisms that dwell in them, marine biology is closely related to the science of oceanography. It helps in the understanding of marine geology through the study of those organisms which contribute their skeletal remains to the ocean floors or elaborate the vast tropical seas coral reefs. A major goal of marine biology is to figure out how ocean processes regulate organism distribution. Marine biologists research how various species are adapted to the different chemical and physical properties of seawater, to ocean motions and waves, to the availability of light at different depths, and to the rigid surfaces that make up the seafloor.
