Inflammation is a process which facilitates many types of cancer. The development and progression of cancer is believed to have an impact through several etiological pathways including increased levels of DNA adduct formation, increased angiogenesis and altered anti-apoptotic signaling. The application of inflammatory biomarkers in epidemiological studies and the discussion of the different cellular inflammation mediators characterizing the response of the innate immune system to infection and chronic insult from environmental factors. Six groups of biomarkers associated with inflammation: cytokines / chemokines, reactive oxygen and nitrogen compounds, immune-related effectors, acute-phase proteins prostaglandins and cyclooxygenase-related factors and mediators such as transcription and growth factors.
