Hemoptysis Innovations

Massive hemoptysis is a life-threatening respiratory emergency requiring immediate management. It is defined as an expectoration of 300 to 600 ml of blood over a 24 hour period. The most common etiologies include bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, neoplasm, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis and other infections. While only five percent of hemoptysis is massive, some studies report a mortality rate of up to 80 percent in this subgroup, mainly due to asphyxiation. One of the new ways to manage the subsequent condition is trans-arterial embolization of the bronchial artery, which is a minimally invasive, well-tolerated and relatively safe procedure. Here, we present a present case with massive hemoptysis due to an iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula that occurred as a complication of a right anterior middle lobectomy successfully treated with coils.
