Global warming is the temperature of the Earth's earth, oceans and atmosphere that has been rising for decades. Today's average temperatures are around 1 ° C (1.8 ° F) higher than before the Industrial Revolution. But in certain parts of the world it is lower than that and more. Nearly all scientists say that by the year 2100 temperatures will be 1.5 ° C (2.7 ° F) to 5 ° C (9.0 ° F) higher than before 1750. Due to this increase in temperature, the most noticeable changes are the melting of ice caps around the world. The sea level is gradually increasing due to the melting of continental ice into the sea. In the 21st centime, many cities will be partially flooded by the ocean. Among the greenhouse gasses, the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the main cause of global warming. This adds carbon dioxide to the air when people burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. This is because fossil fuels contain lots of carbon, and burning means that most of the atoms in the fuel are joined with oxygen. When people cut down many trees (deforestation) that means that those plants take less carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
