Earth's biodiversity helps preserve the balance of nature on our planet. A habitat that has reached a balance between the different number of species present and the natural resources available there is a balanced habitat. These habitats, whose biodiversity is largely unchanged, are much more likely to survive threats than those whose biodiversity is less. Indeed, the ecosystem has more immunity against unnatural changes. Human-made threats such as deforestation, pollution and human settlements have led to the extinction of many species worldwide. Many human activities can destroy a single species and thus break natural food chains, reducing the overall biodiversity of an ecosystem. Open access to scientific literature means removing barriers (including price barriers) to access academic work. There are two parallel paths to open access: open access articles and self-archiving. Open access articles are immediately and freely available on their website, a model funded mainly by fees paid by the author (usually through a research grant). The alternative for a researcher is self-archiving (i.e. publishing in a traditional journal, where only subscribers have immediate access, but making the article available on their personal websites and / or institutional (including so-called repositories or archives)), which is a practice authorized by many scholarly journals.
