The free floating thrombus of the internal carotid artery is a rare entity that puts the patient at high risk for acute ischemic stroke. It is characterized by an intraluminal thrombus within the internal carotid artery (ICA) and is aggressively managed by surgical, medical or combined therapy.
The free floating thrombus (FFT) in the carotid artery is a rare finding and rarely reported in the literature. Treatment options for these patients include medical management or surgical procedures, both of which have reported similar results. Intraluminal thrombus projecting into the internal carotid artery. It is frequently associated with atherosclerotic plaque. The amount of thrombus can vary from small to extensive throughout the ICA.
