Case Reports And Ethical Rules

Case reports are a valuable method of informing practice for as long as medicine has been practised. Despite their importance, and contemporary trends supporting their further use, publishing case reports are often a difficult task for several clinicians and researchers. Preparing a case report for publication are often both a professionally and personally rewarding endeavour for clinicians. Case reports have informed practice for as long as medicine has been practised. Derided by some, but adored by others, the published case report has had an extended and chequered history in evidence-based medicine. In the age of the clinical test and evidence-based practice, published case reports still capture and describe important scientific and clinical observations which will be missed or undetected in ‘higher hierarchy’ designs such as clinical trials. Additionally, case reports can provide important patient-centred clinical insight which will inform the individualised nature of up to date patient care. Case reports can generate hypotheses for future clinical studies, guide the personalisation of treatments in clinical practice, and (particularly useful in integrative medicine) help to gauge systems-oriented approaches to healthcare.
