Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient, being necessary at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2 ppm in animal feed, and with a recommended daily dose of 55 μg / day for men and women. It plays an essential role in various physiological processes as an essential constituent of some 25 selenoenzymes in which it is present in the form of selenoamino acid, selenocysteine, which is not found in other proteins [. Almost all Americans meet daily Se needs; however, some populations in Europe, Africa and Asia have intakes well below 25 μg / day

It has been investigated that insufficient Se can retard growth and alter bone metabolism. The concentration of Se in the blood has been shown to be inversely related to the rate of bone turnover and positively correlated with the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) in humans. Low intake of Se has been associated with an increased risk of bone disease. The results of mechanistic studies have suggested an underlying mechanism, that is to say that Se plays an essential role in the antioxidant defense supporting immune surveillance and cell proliferation and differentiation.
