Peripheral vascular disease commonly known as peripheral artery disease or peripheral artery occlusive disease or peripheral obliterative artery disease, refers to obstruction of the large arteries. But, these do not include those present in the heart, the aortic arch vasculature, or the brain. Peripheral vascular disease can be caused by atherosclerosis, stenosis, thrombus, or embolism. It can cause chronic or acute ischemia or lack of blood supply. Peripheral vascular disease is generally used to refer to blockages in the lower limb that is atherosclerotic.
