Susana Martins

Biography

I first studied Art History at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Lisbon). After graduating in 2004, I joined the Sintra Museum of Modern Art – Colecção Berardo,where I simultaneously worked as education responsible and as assistant curator for two years. Thereafter, I started my PhD in Photography and Cultural Studies (funded by FCT-Portugal) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (BE), under the supervision ofProfessor Jan Baetens, and became a member of the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography. Since then, I have been working on topics such as photography, travel books, tourism, exhibition display, cinema and national identities.In 2011, I concluded my doctoral research on photography, with particular focus on the image of Portugal, as built internationally during the 1950s, having defended the thesis entitled Portugal as seen through foreign eyes: photography and visual culture in the 1950s.Since 2009, I have also been working as a lecturer, teaching courses on Photography, Impressionism, Communication Semiotics and Lusophone Studies at different universities.Currently, I am an FCT-Portugal postdoctoral Research Fellow both at the Institute for Art History (IHA-FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal) and at the Institute for Cultural Studies of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
