Dr. Samantha Lycett is interested in the evolution and spread of fast evolving viruses including Influenza A viruses and HIV. Her research makes use of the large quantity of viral sequence data now available, and She apply machine learning techniques (particularly Bayesian Graphical Models) and bayesian phylogenetics to investigate genotype-phenotype problems, host adaptation, epistatic interactions, phylodynamics and phylogeography in avian, swine and human Influenza A viruses. She also developing computational techniques to extract transmission networks from HIV sequence data via time resolved phylogenetic trees, and the subsequent analysis of those networks in order to understand how best to combat the disease.
