Joshua A Hirsch

Biography

 Joshua A. Hirsch, MD, a Mass General physician who serves as Director of theNeuroendovascular Program, Chief of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Associate Vice Chair of Interventional Care, has been named president of theSociety of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS). Hirsch was named to the position following an annual election in August, in which the society's 600 members are invited to vote for leadership positions. He has served as an elected leader of SNIS for much of the past decade.

The SNIS comprises physicians across the United States with backgrounds in interventional neuroradiology, endovascular neurosurgery, and interventional neurology, who have special expertise in treating such conditions as stroke, aneurysms, carotid stenosis and spinal abnormalities through minimally invasive procedures. Having originated many of these procedures over the last 20 years, neurointerventional physicians are helping to transform the treatment landscape and improve outcomes for conditions that have the significant potential for loss of life or severely impaired quality of life.

Having practiced locally since 1997, Hirsch is considered a key opinion leader in the interventional field. Regarding his being elected to the presidency of SNIS, Hirsch says, "I am honored to have this opportunity to serve my society and my fellow colleagues in this way. As the NeuroInterventional field's leading resource for professional training, practice development and clinical standards, SNIS has been at the forefront in helping to advance our specialty and raise the bar on quality of care for patients everywhere."

Hirsch joined Mass General in 2003 and is the Director of the Neuroendovascular Program. He is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and a Fellow of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Interventional Radiology. He is a founding editor of the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery (JNIS), senior editor of Pain Physician (2011 Thompson Reuter Impact Factor 7.793) and the editorial advisory board of Neurosurgery. Hirsch is a distinguished academician having published well over 100 articles in the peer-reviewed literature, authored numerous book chapters and edited several scientific books.
