Biography

Dr. B.Vaisman is a Staff Scientist at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA. He earned his MSc in Biochemistry at the St.-Petersburg State University, Russia and obtained his PhD at the Institute for Experimental Medicine, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, St.-Petersburg, Russia in 1975. At this Institute Dr.Vaisman worked in Department of Embryology, later transformed in the Department of Molecular Genetics. From 1982 Dr. Vaisman concentrated on creating and studying genetically modified animals, modelling different human diseases. Since 1992 he has worked at NHLBI in the Lipoprotein Metabolism Section (previously Molecular Disease Branch) creating and studying genetically modified animals designed for advancement of our knowledge about molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis and for development of new methods of treatment of this disease, particularly by enhancing reverse cholesterol transport. Dr. Vaisman has authored 60 research articles. He is a member of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
