Being overweight builds the odds of building up the normal kind of diabetes, type 2 diabetes. In this disease, the body produces enough insulin, but the body's cells have become resistant to the beneficial action of insulin. Being overweight emphasizes the interior of individual cells. More precisely, overeating stresses the membranous network inside cells called the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). When the ER has more nutrients to handle than it can handle, it sends an alarm signal to the cell to attenuate the insulin receptors on the cell surface. This results in resistance to insulin and to persistent high levels of blood glucose - one of the clear signs of diabetes. reducing body weight improves glycemic control, mortality and morbidity. Obesity treatment in diabetics is hindered because some diabetic treatments cause weight gain. Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective anti-obesity treatment and causes long-term remission of diabetes in many patients. However, surgery has a high cost and is associated with a significant risk of complications, and in practical terms, only a limited number can undergo this therapy.
