Chronic Pain Treatment Journals

The pain is generally classified as acute or chronic. Acute pain is associated with a diagnosis or medical condition, medical or surgical intervention, or a flare-up of a chronic medical condition. From the point of view of the temporal evolution of pain, acute pain generally has a well-defined temporal evolution. Treatment is relatively simple, especially for acute pain with a specific cause. Analgesic therapies, combined with treatments directed against the underlying disease, are generally effective.

Chronic pain is associated with a pathological process, especially for diseases associated with high mortality, such as cancer. Chronic pain can be associated not only with the pathological process itself, but with the treatment of the disease. For example, various epidemiological surveys suggest that up to 20% to 25% of patients with chronic cancer pain have pain related to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.1

Ironically, some of these patients are cured of cancer, but suffer from intractable pain after treatment. AIDS, chronic arthritis, sickle cell anemia and many other medical diagnoses can also cause chronic pain.
