From Waste to Energy: A Critical Review of Crop Residue Management and Bioenergy Implicit in Pakistan

Abstract

Ramla Khan*

Agriculture plays a significant part in Pakistan's economy, contributing overall to its GDP, yet it's also a vital motorist of environmental declination due to practices like crop residue burning. This paper reviews the current state of crop residue handling in Pakistan, concentrating on the environmental and profitable charges of residue burning, which remains a pervasive practice despite its harmful effects. This review examines the potentiality for using crop residues as renewable energy sources, pressing both the challenges and chances for integrating bioenergy results into Pakistan's agrarian sector. The paper also analyzes the programs governing crop residue operation and their effectiveness in bridling burning practices, identifying gaps in enforcement and offering recommendations for policy reform. Through a comprehensive literature review and critical analysis, the paper underscores the need for sustainable residue handling practices, promoting a shift towards cleaner choices that could soothe environmental impacts, reduce air pollution, and contribute to addressing Pakistan's energy extremity. Mainly this paper presents recommendations for sustainable governance practices and discusses the integration of bioenergy as a feasible way.
