Microbiota Transplant

Administration of fecal matter solution of donor which contains fecal bacteria and other microbes into the intestinal tract of recipient to directly change the recipient’s gut microbial composition to confer a health benefit is called as Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT). It is also known as Stool transplant. It works more effective than vancomycin, an antibiotic which is generally used to treat bacterial infections. Donor should be screened well before the transplantation as this may lead to risk of infections if not thoroughly checked. It involves restoration of colonic microflora through colonoscopy, enema, orogastric tube, or through mouth in form of a capsule. It is generally used an effective treatment for an infection called Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI).
