Biography

Associate Professor Philip Cheang is the Dean of School of Science and Technology (SST) at SIM University. The school offers twelve undergraduate degree programmes with local and international partners and accredited by various professional bodies. Associate Professor Cheang was the Assistant Head to the Division of Bioengineering, College of Engineering, and the Director of Advanced Materials Research Center (AMRC) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, before joining UniSIM in 2008. Associate Professor Cheang’s experience in academia began in 1991 and his contribution covers curriculum development, teaching, development of research facilities, building tertiary research partnerships and online education. He contributed to the pioneering of the Materials Engineering degree programme in 1991, the Bioengineering Degree programme in 2003, and empowered‐learning pedagogy at SST. Associate Professor Cheang is well‐known for his research on artificial bone, thermal spraying and nanotechnology, where he published over 238 scientific and technical papers, filed 2 patents and 7 invention/technology disclosures under his name. His publications have been cited over 1734 times according to ISI Web of Science with a Hirsch‐index of 24. He was featured numerous times by the media for outstanding achievements and pioneering work on tissue engineering and cancer research. He has led over 22 research projects as principal investigator, co‐principal investigator and collaborator with reputed partners from industry and academia. Associate Professor Cheang serves on the National Research Foundation (NRF) as a member of the local evaluation panel of their Competitive Research Programme (CRP). He is also the Chair of the Technical Advisory Board at Bio‐scaffold International. He is a registered Chartered Engineer (UK) and a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK since 1993.
Associate Professor Cheang obtained his BEng (1986) and PhD (1990) from Monash University and has won numerous awards: Top Student, Comalco Limited Prize, Steel Mains Prize, Frank Bailey Memorial Prize, National Consolidated Vacation Work Report Prize and Monash Research Scholarship to pursue his post‐graduate studies.
